<p>The 154th Composite Group was expanded from one squadron to three, with the activation of the 203rd Air Refueling Squadron and the 204th Airlift Squadron joining the 199th Fighter Squadron. The 199th Fighter Squadron was created in November 1946 at Bellows Field with T-6s among a mix of non-combat types, until July 1947 when the P-47N was delivered. The squadron moved to Hickam Field in late 1947 and was redesignated the 199th Fighter-Bomber Squadron in July 1952 and the 199th FIS four months later. It was equipped with the T-33A in November 1953 and the F-86E in February 1954. The squadron upgraded to the F-86L early in 1958, with the 165th FIG allocated in December 1960. The unit converted to the F-102A in January 1961, and in June 1976 re-equipped with the F-4C as the 199th TFS. The designation changed to Composite Group status in November 1978. The squadron converted to the F-15A in March 1987.

<p>The 203rd Air Refueling Squadron was activated early in 1993 with four KC-135Rs to provide a degree of independence for the F-15s of the 199th FS. The Hawaii ANG was further expanded in 1994 with the formation of the 204th Airlift Squadron with a number of brand new C-130Hs.
